By default, new documents that you create will be in portrait orientation. Portrait is tall and slim, whereas landscape is short and wide (see below).

Portrait orientation is good for documents that are letters, whereas landscape orientation is good for such things as accommodating wide tables.

How To Change Your Word 2010 Document To Landscape Or Portrait

To change your Word 2010 document to be in portrait or landscape orientation, click Page Layout > Page Setup > Orientation, and then select the required orientation. The page orientation will change whilts the content remains the same and adjusts to the shape of the document.
